In 2022, tire corporation Bridgestone used the IndyCar racing sequence to debut a new sustainable pure rubber that it has been testing as a replacement for fewer environmentally pleasant rubber. The new tires utilized rubber from a desert shrub identified as guayule (Parthenium argentatum). Now, Bridgestone is ready to attempt the rubber in a extra realistic software and has developed a demonstration operate of highway-going tires working with guayule rubber and a high proportion of recycled products. The corporation will conduct exams with automakers to show the principle.

The world generates about 2 billion tires each year, and although artificial rubbers are employed in modest amounts, most highway tires use a large amount of normal rubber from the para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). But 90 % of para rubber is grown in Southeast Asia and has to be shipped all over the globe to achieve tire factories.

Bridgestone has been hunting at guayule as an option for a minimal over a decade now. The guayule plant is a shorter, woody shrub that grows very easily in the deserts of the American Southwest and calls for much less water than crops like alfalfa or cotton that are also developed there. In Arizona, Bridgestone has been breeding guayule and conducting research and development on its use in tire-producing.

Far more than just all-natural rubber

In truth, these new tires include more than just guayule rubber. Bridgestone states that 38 % of the tire’s information is biological in origin—there’s some para and guayule rubber, but also plant-dependent oils and resins, biologically derived silica from rice husk ash, and biologically derived carbon black.

Another 37 p.c of the tire’s material is from recycled materials. These contain recycled metal (for the tire’s belt), recycled rubber chemical substances, carbon black from equally recycled resources and conclude-of-existence tire pyrolysis oil, and artificial rubber built from sustainable products like recycled plastic bottles.

“As we progress in our transformation to a sustainable solutions firm, we are earning incredible progress in the use of recycled and renewable materials to carry sustainable tire technologies from the drawing board to the driveway,” said Paolo Ferrari, president and CEO of Bridgestone Americas. “The creation and deployment of a 75-percent recycled and renewable components tire engineering marks a considerable milestone as we speed up our development toward employing entirely sustainable supplies in our goods by 2050.”

Bridgestone manufactured a operate of 200 demonstration tires at its Aiken County Passenger/Light Truck Radial Tire Plant in Graniteville, South Carolina, which is the 1st US tire manufacturing facility to generate an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification for its transparency and traceability of sustainable raw products. The plant also utilizes an eight-acre solar array to assist power its operations—tire manufacturing is a pretty energy-intensive system.

Now the tire organization will carry out joint evaluations with automakers to exam these tires’ suitability for future EVs, and it hopes the good longevity of guayule rubber will be properly-suited to that application.
